in the 2000s, I was working on formulating a home-made tabular grain (T-grain) type emulsion. I gave some of the emulsion to a friend, Stan Cassell at Chemoptix, who does microscopic analysis to see what his microscope could see. He prepared two slides of the emulsion by smearing diluted emulsion on a microscope slide. Using a Zeiss microscope with oil immersion optics, he took photos with a SPOT RT digital camera. He then processed the images with Image Pro Plus software to measure the silver emulsion particle size distribution.
